Archiving Women Through Change

The Quilt

A living archive of women’s stories and art through change.

The Quilt is the archival heart of Recollections Within. It gathers stories and creative work shaped by memory, transition, identity, loss, reinvention, belonging, and becoming.

Each contribution stands on its own. Together, they form a living cultural record of women’s lives as they are lived: complex, unfinished, and continually changing.

How The Quilt is shaped

The name The Quilt describes how the archive works.

A quilt is made of separate pieces, each with its own history, texture, and origin, held in relationship without losing its distinct form. The archive follows that same structure.

Stories and creative work are gathered into thematic collections shaped by shared thresholds of change rather than chronology alone. Each piece remains distinct. Together they create a body of record that reflects the layered, interconnected nature of women’s lives.

What The Quilt holds

The Quilt holds original work shaped by lived experience and offered in forms that can be preserved as part of the archive.

It may include written narrative, poetry, visual art, photography, audio storytelling, music, video, and hybrid work rooted in memory, identity, transition, and change. It may also preserve forms such as dance, sculpture, fiber art, and mixed media through documentation, photography, video, or other archive-ready formats.

The archive is especially concerned with the passages that alter a life, including grief, caregiving, illness, migration, estrangement, recovery, aging, love, loss, home, inheritance, survival, reinvention, and quieter forms of change that official records often fail to keep.

A life does not need to be dramatic to belong here. The Quilt also makes room for domestic history, inherited memory, relational complexity, cultural continuity, and the subtle emotional realities that shape who we become over time.

The archive is organized by the threshold through which a life is being altered, understood, carried, or remembered.

These collections form the primary structure of The Quilt.

Seasons of Change

Work centered on threshold itself: beginnings, unraveling, reinvention, rites of passage, aging, spiritual transition, and the seasons through which a life is remade.

Motherlines

Work shaped by lineage, caregiving, inheritance, daughterhood, motherhood, non-motherhood, chosen family, and generational passage across women’s lives.

Body & Memory

Work shaped by embodiment, illness, aging, disability, trauma, healing, survival, and the ways change is lived through the body.

Selfhood & Becoming

Work shaped by identity, naming, coming out, recovery, refusal, and the inner passages through which a person becomes more fully themselves through change.

Love & Loss

Work shaped by attachment, intimacy, heartbreak, estrangement, devotion, grief, and the passages of love that alter a life.

Homeplace

Work shaped by place, migration, origin, displacement, belonging, domestic memory, return, and the remaking of home through change.

How your work becomes part of The Quilt

The Quilt grows because women choose to place their stories and art within it. When you contribute, you help build a living archive of women’s lives across change.

Recollections Within receives your work with care, considers where it belongs, and preserves it as part of a larger cultural record.

  • You contribute – You submit a story, artwork, or other creative work to The Quilt, adding to a living archive of women’s lives across change.
  • We consider – We read each contribution with care, paying attention to its integrity, its context, and the threshold it preserves.
  • The Quilt becomes more – When a piece is accepted, it becomes part of the archive’s growing body of record, placed with intention and preserved within the larger whole.
